FlySafair begins operations

1084

FlySafair’s first flight took off from Cape Town International Airport for O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on 16 October.

Parent airline Safair was granted approval by South Africa’s Air Service Licensing Council to launch its own domestic scheduled operation in August 2013 (see story here), but faced opposition from other South African airlines that objected to the nationality of FlySafair’s majority shareholders (see story here).

The airline’s low-cost fares start at $50 for flights between Cape Town and Johannesburg, and $40 between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, as well Cape Town and George. These fares secure a seat and allow for two pieces of free carry-on luggage that have a combined weight of no more than seven kilograms.

Passengers may select additional extras such as pre-booked preferential seat selection, extra-space seats, on-board catering, travel insurance and checked-in luggage, which are all charged for separately on a menu-type basis.
