The City Lodge Hotel Group is planning to open its first hotel in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa, towards the end of 2015, through the development of the 148-room City Lodge Hotel Newtown situated in the Newtown Junction shopping, office and entertainment precinct.

The hotel is expected to have an all-inclusive cost of around $14.5 million, of which approximately $4.2 million will be spent on furniture and fittings.

The hotel, to be situated on the corner of Gwigwi Mrwebi and Miriam Makeba streets, will feature seven levels, including two parking levels and 60 dedicated parking bays. It will have two boardrooms, a swimming pool, coffee shop, sundowner bar and mini-gym.

“Newtown has become one of the city’s most vibrant nodes and we believe it is an excellent location that will attract and meet the accommodation needs of both business and leisure travellers,” said Clifford Ross, City Lodge Hotel Group’s Chief Executive.

The City Lodge Hotel Group currently has 51 hotels in South Africa, two in Kenya and one in Botswana. Earlier this month it announced that agreements had been reached to develop a 170-room City Lodge Hotel at the Two Rivers mixed-use complex in Nairobi, Kenya, and a 147-room City Lodge Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
