Delta suspends Liberia operations

U.S airline Delta Air Lines says it will cease operations to the former war-torn Liberia at the end of August.

The airline said that the decision was due to weak passenger demand. Delta Airlines commenced flights to New York from Monrovia via Accra (Ghana) in 2010, but traffic has been low over the years, despite efforts to boost numbers on the route.

Delta commenced direct flights into Nigeria through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in the last quarter of 2009.

The airline stated that while Nigeria and Ghana are netting 10,000,000 and over 2,000,000 passengers per year respectively, Liberia’s highest passenger level was only 205,000, recorded in 2013.
