Hotel Check: Sugar Beach Golf and Spa Resort

Mauritius

2033

Background: Sugar Beach Golf and Spa Resort is part of the Sun Resorts stable, which includes one property in the Maldives – Kanuhura – and four other Mauritius properties – Long Beach Golf & Spa Resort, La Pirogue Resort & Spa, Ambre Resort & Spa, and Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club.

Where is it? This plantation-style resort located on the west coast of Mauritius is spread over 12 hectares that overlook the coral reef, about one hour (55km) from the international airport on Mauritius.

Room facilities: Each of the 258 rooms has a private balcony that leads onto tropical gardens, while the 26 Superior rooms have direct beach access. Each room has tea and coffee making facilities, while VIPs receive a bottle of Green Island Rum. It comes with ingredients and instructions on how to make Ti Punch, Mauritius’ most famous cocktail. All the rooms come with standard amenities, including a flat-screen TV, and are 40m2 in size, except for the Villa Beach Front Suites, which are 80m2.  The complimentary wi-fi can also be accessed from a lounger on the beach.

Restaurants & bars: The main restaurant Mon Plaisir has a daily live cooking buffet and themed dinners, so you’ll never get bored with what’s on offer. Tides, located at the beachfront, was my favourite because of its extensive lunch and dinner seafood menu. Guests are also welcome to dine at Paul & Virginie Restaurant at the adjoining La Pirogue, which serves traditional Mauritian and Creole food on the beach. Oceanside Italian restaurant Citronella’s Cafe serves light meals and wood-fired pizza. All the restaurants, except for Paul & Virginie, have a bar too, and sports fanatics can enjoy live sport at the Sports Bar, which also has a pool table, air hockey table, an electronic dart board, as well as other arcade games. Should you prefer, you can dine in your room 24 hours a day or request the beach service, which I would recommend doing at least once.

Business & meeting facilities: The resort offers  over 294m2 of function space located near the entrance of the resort. All rooms are equipped with the latest technology and the space can seat 350 people cinema style, 180 banquet style and 84 u-shape style. The resort’s meeting planner will help you co-ordinate your event.

Leisure facilities: At 2,000m2 Sugar Beach has the largest swimming pool on the island, which also has a relaxing bubble pool. The South Pool is perfect for lounging about with a cocktail in hand. The range of free activities on offer means you’ll never get bored, from tennis, beach volleyball and the French pastime of boulles to windsurfing, snorkelling and trips in a glass-bottomed boat. For an additional charge you can also take a day-long catamaran cruise, try water skiing or go big game fishing. Golfers will be pleased to hear that the new road between the resort and Tamarina Golf Course will cut down travelling time to five minutes. All guests receive complimentary access to Tamarina Golf Course and Ile aux Cerfs Golf Course on the east coast. It’s no surprise that Aura Spa has won so many awards – its hamman also has a heated pool, there are single and couples treatment rooms, as well as a Shiatsu treatment area. There’s also a unisex hair salon. You can burn off some calories after all that indulgence at dinner in the fitness centre or join a free taebo, kick boxing, judo or karate class. Parents can leave their kids in the care of the minders at children and teens clubs, where they will be entertained with age-appropriate activities, as well as sports, adventure excursions, beach barbecues or make-your-own pizza nights.

Verdict: Whether you’re on an incentive trip, are conferencing on-site, or indulging in some leisure travel, this five-star Sun Resorts property ticks a lot of boxes.
