The new stretched Boeing 747-8 passenger version landed on African soil when Lufthansa flight LH 572 from Frankfurt arrived in Johannesburg at O.R. Tambo International Airport on 25 October.

This next generation iconic Jumbo Jet will become the aircraft serving Johannesburg in future, with daily non-stop flights.

“The four-class Boeing 747-8 is our most advanced long-haul aircraft, bringing comfort and premium service to our customers with the most fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft in the Lufthansa fleet,” said Andre Schulz, Lufthansa’s General Manager for South Africa. In total, the airline has ordered 19 of the stretched Boeing 747s.

The airline has invested $1.65 billion in on-board products for its first, business and premium economy cabins.

The new business class cabin offers a fully-flat bed, upgraded meal service and 15-inch TV monitors.

Lufthansa has also resumed its daily non-stop schedule between Munich and Cape Town using the Airbus A340-300.  In addition, Edelweiss, Switzerland’s leisure carrier and subsidiary of SWISS, will operate its seasonal schedule between Zurich and the Mother City.
