Business Traveller Africa Awards

The Business Traveller Africa Awards is aimed at the local travel trade and broader business travel community, and rewards excellence in South African business travel, acknowledging those brands/entities that have performed with distinction over the past 12 months.

How It Works

A voting survey is compiled, covering all the sectors in the business travel industry, such as aviation, hotel, car rental, travel management, private aviation, travel credit card, conferencing, visas, etc. All businesses in the industry are automatically entered and we leave it up to the industry to decide the winners.

In some categories there are drop-down menus to help prompt voters. These are not nominees, but rather a prompt; people can vote for a business not listed by naming them in the ‘Other’ box. In the categories where there are no drop-down menus, there are just too many contenders for us to list, hence we just ask people to insert a name.

We then put that voting survey out to the entire business travel industry, via our various channels and the relationships we have with various organisations (ASATA, SAACI, SATSA and ABTA).

The votes are collated before they are vetted by a voting panel of senior industry members, led by Gillian Saunders, currently Special Advisor to the Minister of Tourism.

Categories

  1. African Regional Short-Haul Airline – Best African regional airline, covering Southern African airlines that fly to at least one other Southern African country and taking into account on-time record, safety, onboard product (including seating, business class product, food and beverage, service), lounge facilities, website, route network, loyalty programme and value for money.
  2. African Long-Haul Airline – Best African airline, covering African airlines that fly to at least one international (non-African) destination and taking into account on-time record, safety, onboard product (including seating, business class product, food and beverage, in-flight entertainment, service), lounge facilities, website, loyalty programme, route network, codeshare offering and value for money.
  3. African Low-Cost Airline – Best African low-cost airline, covering African airlines that offer a ‘budget’ product and taking into account on-time record, safety, onboard product (including seating, food and beverage, service), website, route network and value for money.
  4. International Long-Haul Airline – Best non-African airline, covering international airlines that fly into and out of South Africa, and taking into account on-time record, safety, onboard product (including seating, business class product, food and beverage, service), lounge offering, website, loyalty programme, route network, codeshare offering and value for money.
  5. Business Class – Best airline business class product of all the airlines flying into and out of South Africa, covering lounge offering (wi-fi, food and beverage, comfort) and onboard product, including seat, service, food and beverage, in-flight entertainment, lie-flat option, ability to work onboard and additional services.
  6. Airport Business Lounge – Best airport lounge in South Africa, covering wi-fi, food and beverage, comfort, service, flight schedule information, reading material, plug point options and onsite facilities (showers, toilets etc).
  7. Private Aviation Operator – Best private aviation offering, covering service, fleet offering, variety of services, value for money, onboard product (including seating, wi-fi, food and beverage, service, meeting facilities), safety and corporate offering.
  8. Global Distribution System – Best global distribution system in the South African market, as used by travel agents and bookers, covering ease of use, service, products and general offering.
  9. Business Hotel in SA – Regardless of star grading, the best business hotel in South Africa, taking into account rooms, business services, wi-fi offering, meeting and conferencing facilities, food, service, location, corporate offering, additional services and value for money.
  10. Luxury Hotel in SA – Best 5-star luxury hotel in South Africa, taking into account rooms, leisure facilities, food and beverage, service, design, layout, and additional services in the form of ‘out-the-box’ extras.
  11. South African Hotel Group – Best South African group, with at least two hotel properties in South Africa, and with the most consistent offering in terms of those properties across the country, the quality of those properties and consistency in service, accommodation, facilities, business facilities, variety of locations, meeting and conferencing facilities, wi-fi offering, food and beverage, loyalty programme, additional services and value for money.
  12. International Hotel Group – Best international group, with a presence in South Africa, and with the most consistent offering in terms of its properties in South Africa, the quality of those properties and consistency in service, accommodation, facilities, business facilities, variety of locations, meeting and conferencing facilities, wi-fi offering, food and beverage, loyalty programme, additional services and value for money.
  13. Small Hotel Conference Venue – Best small hotel conference venue in South Africa, catering for less than 100 delegates, that presents the most comprehensive and consistent offering, covering meeting/conference room or rooms, food and beverage, wi-fi offering, service, technical facilities, location and value for money.
  14. Large Hotel Conference Venue – Best large hotel conference venue in South Africa, catering for more than 100 delegates, that presents the most comprehensive and consistent offering, covering meeting/conference room or rooms, food and beverage, wi-fi offering, service, technical facilities, location and value for money.
  15. Small Conference Venue – Best stand-alone small conference venue in South Africa, not linked to a hotel or group, catering for less than 100 delegates, that presents the most comprehensive and consistent offering, covering meeting/conference room or rooms, food and beverage, wi-fi offering, service, technical facilities, location and value for money.
  16. Large Conference Venue – Best large conference venue in South Africa, catering for 250 delegates and more, that presents the most comprehensive and consistent offering, covering meeting/conference room or rooms, exhibition options/space, food and beverage, wi-fi offering, service, technical facilities, location and value for money.
  17. Car Rental Brand – Best car rental brand in South Africa, covering service, online experience, call centre, product quality, variety of vehicles, loyalty programme, corporate offering, South African footprint and value for money.
  18. Travel Management Company – Best TMC in South Africa, covering service, industry and product knowledge, variety of services, reconciliation procedures, website, 24-hour response, crisis management, African footprint, corporate offering, partners, innovation and value for money.
  19. Forex Supplier – Best forex brand in South Africa that offers the most consistent service, value for money, breadth of offering, variety of currency, online offering, African footprint and reach.
  20. Travel Credit Card Provider – Best travel credit card provider in South Africa, covering the products it offers, ease of use, benefits, reconciliation, processes and general offering.
  21. Visa Service Provider – The most efficient, informed, connected and cost-effective visa service provider in South Africa, with the best knowledge of visa requirements, quickest turnaround times, value for money and general efficiency.
  22. Travel Sales Team – Covering all elements of the South African business travel industry, it’s the sales team that made the most impact in the year from a new business point of view, the team that went to extra lengths to maintain client relationships and retain clients, industry and product knowledge, extent of relationships, understanding of clients’ needs, creativity and flexibility in packaging corporate deals, and the best ambassadors of their brands.
  23. Cruise Operator – Best cruise operator in the South African market, based on the quality of product, the range of services, the service levels, and overall ‘wow’ factor.
