What’s it like?
With the Atlantic Ocean just a stone’s throw away, Avenue Suites is well situated for both leisure and business travellers. It’s also a well-designed property with much attention to detail, sophistication and class. A stay will offer the luxury of experiencing the finer things in life, which are put into play in a simple and comfortable way. This modern property has six floors and a penthouse popularly known amongst certain upwardly mobile individuals as ‘Level 7’.
Location
Avenue Suites is strategically located on Tiamiyu Savage Street, in close proximity to the Lagos Bar Beach in the central business district of Victoria Island, with a remarkable view of the city overlooking the Kuramo Waters and the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel is easily accessible from the mainland, as its location is just off the exit to Victoria Island. Murtala Mohammed International Airport is approximately 25 kilometres away. However, the local advice is to leave well in advance of a flight time, taking into account the legendary Lagos traffic.
Room Facilities
Avenue Suites has 60 rooms and five suites, divided into Classic, Deluxe, Deluxe Twin, Executive, Suite, Deluxe Executive and Royal Suite rooms. My room – with all the fittings of a ‘business-cum-pleasure’ hotel – was really comfortable and spacious, elegant and stylish, with soundproof double-glazed windows for privacy, along with a perfect view of the Atlantic Ocean. It featured a king-sized bed with ostrich feather pillows, two casual chairs, a 32-inch LCD TV and a comfortable dressing table/desk, which made for an ideal workstation. There was high-speed Wi-Fi Internet, tea/coffee-making facilities, a digital safe, hair dryer, 24-hour room service, universal adaptor socket and an electronic ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign. The bathroom had granite floors and surfaces throughout with ample personalised amenities.
Restaurants & Bars
The hotel has dining outlets which are open 24 hours a day. There is the lobby kitchen & bar situated beside the reception area where complimentary breakfast is served. The Uptown Restaurant & Lounge on Level 7 features the Sushi Bar, serving an à la carte menu featuring a blend of Italian, international and sushi specialties with wines such as the Saki wine, Sapuro wines and others. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean and there is a giant screen which is ideal for visual entertainment. I opted for the local Nigerian dish of pounded yam served with oha soup, which was served 30 minutes after I placed my order. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
Meeting Facilities
Avenue Suites has a conference and meeting facility ideal for small gatherings, business conferences and special events seating up to 150 guests, depending on the seating arrangement. It has a unique style and is equipped with the latest conference technology. It has audio and video equipment, high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access available all around the hotel, as well as qualified staff members available on hand. Catering can also be tailor-made to suit guests’ requirements. The Level 7 Lounge is also available for events on special request.
Leisure
If you want to experience the height of classic style and redefined sophistication in night life, then the Level 7 Lounge, with its unique décor, is a must-visit, as it will appeal to those who enjoy the finer things in life. The lounge features plush sofas, comfortable armchairs and a dining corner. The hotel gym centre is rather small, with a few exercise machines and a flat-screen TV to keep you informed, while working out. However, there are plans for expansion in the near future. There is an excellent swimming pool area, where you can enjoy a dip while relaxing with some poolside dining in an attractive outdoor setting.
Verdict
Having been open less than a year, the hotel is an excellent addition to the existing hotels on Victoria Island. It’s a lifestyle hotel to consider if you are looking for a stay that will offer luxury, simplicity and comfort.
