Background
The Southern Sun Montecasino is the latest addition to the bustling entertainment complex. The hotel opened earlier this year and complements the hotel groups existing portfolio at Montecasino as it caters to the four-star market.
What’s it Like?
The hotel impresses from the moment you first set foot into the lobby. One of the most eye-catching features for me was the massive crystal chandelier hanging over the bar area. It is stunning, and I think captures the elegance and sophistication of the hotel perfectly. The Southern Sun Montecasino blends old-world charm with modern decor perfectly and I found that the more I saw of the hotel, the more I was pleasantly surprised.
Where is it?
It is located within the Montecasino entertainment complex but is separate from the entertainment areas. It is actually part of the new commercial development called The Pivot, which seems to offer a more tranquil space where guests can escape the busy casino. Being located in Fourways means the hotel is not far from the Sandton CBD so it is ideal for travellers doing business in Sandton, but perhaps are looking to be located near to an area that offers a few exciting activities.
Room Facilities
I must say that I was a little disappointed with the size of the room. It is adequate, to put it fairly, but I found that there was only just enough space to move around the room. The bed was not what I expected from a four-star standard room either, as it seemed to be a double-bed size, which again is just adequate. One of the most interesting features of the room was that one of the walls comprised wooden sliding doors that, if opened, allow you to watch the flat-screen TV from the bath. There is also a separate shower in the bathroom. Other facilities include a fridge (which can be stocked on request) and a work desk. There is a smallish balcony which overlooks the pool area. The hotel has 194 bedrooms in total.
Restaurants and Bars
Clearly the hotel’s pride and joy, the Punchinello’s restaurant is an absolute must for all guests. You may be tempted by the multitude of restaurants found in Montecasino but I would advise that you enjoy at least one dinner at the on-site Venetian-inspired restaurant. The food is superb and so is the service. Patrons can watch the chefs at work as the kitchen is open and almost part of the restaurant. There is also a channel on the TVs in the rooms that allows guests to watch the kitchen. An extensive breakfast buffet is also available at the restaurant every morning. Between the lobby and the outside veranda there is a bar and lounge where visitors can enjoy a relaxing sundowner. Dining on the patio is also possible.
Business and Meeting Facilities
Conferencing facilities catering for large and small groups are available at The Pivot, which is adjacent to the hotel.
Leisure Facilities
Southern Sun Montecasino has an on-site gym with state-of-the-art equipment available free of charge to guests. There is also an outdoor pool on the property. Of course, for travellers wanting a little more excitement, the casino and entertainment is just a short walk from the hotel.
Verdict
This hotel is designed to impress. It has stunning finishes and decor coupled with superb facilities and well-trained, friendly staff. Its location makes it convenient and adds to the attractiveness of the hotel.
