Hotel check: StayEasy Pietermaritzburg

885

What’s it like:

The StayEasy in Pietermaritzburg was opened in April 2010 and is owned and managed by Southern Sun. This chain of budget hotels, of which there are now seven, was launched to cater for the business and leisure traveller ‘on-the-go’.  Their claim of offering high-quality accommodation at a great price is not an empty promise.  Southern Sun has found a winner with this offering and intends rolling it out to other locations across the country.  Next to open will be the Greenstone StayEasy in Gauteng. Given this review was conducted on the day before the Comrades Marathon, with the hotel at 100 per cent occupancy and teaming with nervous and agitated athletes, it is commendable that the hotel operated with such efficiency.  Kudos to the kitchen staff who were up at 3 a.m. serving breakfast to runners and supporters.  It is gestures such as this that build loyalty.

Where is it?

The hotel is situated adjacent to the Midlands Mall, which has ready access to the N3 (Chatterton / Armitage offramp).  From the hotel to the centre of Pietermaritzburg is less than 10 minutes.

How many rooms?

The StayEasy has 127 standard quality, double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms (shower only) which are charged at R799 per night, including breakfast.  At the time of writing, the hotel was running a special of R675 per room per night.

Room facilities:

The rooms have a contemporary design and are tastefully furnished with modern fixtures and fittings. The hotel has opted for a limited offering of DStv channels while Wi-Fi access is available throughout the hotel.

Restaurants and bars:

The hotel has an open plan dining room, adjoining the reception area, where continental breakfasts are served.  It does not serve dinner. However, given the close proximity to the Midlands Mall there is no shortage of restaurants within walking distance. Alternatively, meals can be ordered from restaurants for delivery. A bar is available for in-house guests in the evenings.  During the day beverages and light meals can be ordered at the hotel’s swimming pool.

Meeting and business facilities:

There are limited facilities for private meetings, However, the hotel has a small meeting room that can accommodate up to 15 delegates. A small Internet workstation can be found in the lobby.

Verdict

This is hassle-free budget accommodation at its best. StayEasy is up against stiff competition in this segment of the hotel market, but Southern Sun has come up with an offering that will appeal to both business and leisure travellers seeking value for money and first rate service.  This is definitely a case of the ‘less is more’ concept working.
